Love the letter. It is certainly a reflection of the times. Curiously, I was meeting with a former Walt Disney World Cast Member who was let go in the latest set of layoffs. She was commenting how she attended events offered by the company to deal with getting your resume, finding your next job, etc. She noted how stunned she was that the majority of the people in the room were older woman. It easily led her to wonder how "fair" the process was of identifying who might be let go, and who ended up remaining.
Wow. My 16-year-old daughter has difficulty understanding why I couldn't participate in sports when I was growing up. Even after Title IX, there were stigmas attached.
Working primarily on employment law cases, I hear daily the frustrations of "older" women being let go. There are a million rationalizations given which attempt to persuade women that ultimately they're misperceiving what they're seeing and experiencing. I guess it's just women (once again) being oversensitive. . .!
What's really unfortunate is how difficult these kinds of cases are to prove. And, employers know this.
