Building Your Practice with Geoff Sharp's "Don't Be Average" Chart
Geoff Sharp kindly passes along his dad's advice not to be average and to always be in mid-career in his brilliant article on Starting a Mediation Practice here. (chart is Geoff's own)
My dad's career advice? Never be a civil servant or wear a hat. Huh??? Some dads give sound career advice and others zen koans to chew on for the rest of your life. We love them equally because, well, because they're our dads!
Somedays, however, thinking of this little chart is all that keeps my internal energizer bunny rev'ving.
Have a great weekend.

Ah, dads. My father, a German immigrant who came over last century in the midst of the great wave of European immigrants, told me "to work with my head, not with my hands." His family came to the U.S. for economic opportunity and, with no way to afford schooling himself, Dad wanted to make damn sure no kid of his had to be a carpenter by default. One of my favorite photos of my dad was taken with him holding my hand after I earned my master's degree. His pride practically glows from the photo. He never got to help me celebrate the doctorate.

What a sweet story Tammy! I love immigrant stories. MY dad was a dust bowl immigrant who picked fruit as a child in the Imperial Valley as his family of 11 made its way from Nebraska in the Model-T to Ramona, California where dad's mom took in laundry and the entire family raised chickens. Is this not what makes America great? And shouldn't it continue for all?
